The problem
At the roofline, the old counterflashing was bent at the corners and pulling away from the brick. Those gaps gave rain a path behind the metal and put the roof around the chimney at risk of leaking. Higher up, pieces of mortar had fallen out, leaving open joints where water could get in and further weaken the brickwork.
The solution
RoofJay replaced the flashing around the base of the chimney, cutting a groove into the masonry and inserting the upper edge of the new counterflashing into it. The joint was finished with mortar, giving the metal a clean line against the brick without relying on a bead of caulk. Stone Art Masonry also repointed the entire chimney and repaired the crown.
